Urban regeneration landscape projects

Introduction

Landscape Architecture is a profession which has strong associations with geography. Many in the profession have geographical qualifications from university.

The terra firma Consultancy is a landscape architecture firm based in Hampshire with offshoot offices in London, Dubai and Vilnius. Established in 1985 it has worked in over 30 countries across 6 continents. Its projects vary in scale from area landscape assessments, through masterplans for new settlements, public realm and infrastructure, down to individual sites for different use sectors such as health, education, housing, leisure, industry and heritage.

Illustrated here are six examples of terra firma projects that have the potential to form relevant and up-to-date case studies in urban regeneration. They are relevant to both GCSE and A level Geography.

The Beirut Waterfront was an opportunity to showcase to the world the rebuilding programme of a previously war- torn city.

East Beach Selsey Masterplan is an example of a vision for seafront settlement regeneration, involving the local community and building on sense of place.

Lion Square is a central open space for the University of Portsmouth, and an example of upgrading the public realm.

The Test Valley Landscape Character Assessment  was produced by terra firma in 2020. Landscape Character mapping has proven a vital tool to inform development within the planning system, providing a much needed baseline on what comprises local distinctiveness.
