Santiaguito volcano

Introduction

We are delighted to host this comprehensive academic report on Santiaguito, one of the world's most active volcanoes.

The cataclysmic explosion of Santa María in 1902 was one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. It devastated the surrounding landscape, and left a huge crater in the side of the mountain. Santiaguito is a complex of lava domes and lava flows that began erupting into that crater in 1922, and today, after 90 years of continuous activity.

Written and researched by Jeannie Scott (Oxford University), this report details the development and tectonic setting of the volcano and the hazards associated with its eruptions.

This case study provides students with an excellent set of resources to interrogate including maps, data sets, photos and graphs.

The Santiaguito case study is highly suitable for students studying tectonics or volcanic hazards at A level.
