Education for All Morocco - a study of sustainable development

Introduction

At Bristol Grammar School, we have for several years taught a unit on ‘Barriers to Development’ as part of our Y9 Geography course. Having visited Morocco many times with school groups, we have developed a study based on the work of a local charity called Education for All Morocco (EFAM), based in the small town of Asni.

Very few girls from rural communities in Morocco get the opportunity of continuing their education after primary school. To help tackle this, Education for All Morocco, a Moroccan NGO, is building and running girls’ boarding houses near local secondary schools, so that girls from rural families can continue their education. Many of the girls have progressed to attend university and enter professional careers, opportunities that they may well not have had without the provision of the boarding houses.

Aware of how the lack of access to education is a barrier to development, we have developed a website focusing on the importance of education as a means of achieving sustainable development. The resources on the website focus on the work of Education for All Morocco. We are delighted to share this website with other teachers and encourage you to investigate further.

The website can either be used for students to explore and create their own case-study or can be used in a more structured way, working through the tasks and activities. It is intended to be used by students from Y9 upwards.

We welcome any feedback and suggestions for improvement – specifically other activities and questions/resources we can include.

Please email adimberline@bgs.bristol.sch.uk with any feedback or if you would like to be more involved with the work of the charity.
