Pennington Point, Sidmouth, Devon

Introduction

Pennington Point is located at Sidmouth on the South Devon coast. The sandstone cliffs are prone to rockfalls and cliff collapse. The Plymouth Coastal Observatory have been studying these cliffs using aerial photography, topographic surveys and LiDAR (which uses light rather than radio waves).

The data collected highlights some of the contributing factors to cliff collapse at Pennington, with a good correlation between the erosion of the beach at the toe of the cliff and increased activity on the cliff face.

This is an excellent case study for A level geographers.
