Coastal management in Christchurch Bay

Introduction

Coastal systems and management are key topics in studying coasts at A level. Students are required to consider the concept of the coastal system and the processes associated with the sediment cell. Additionally, students are required to make a detailed case study of a stretch of coastline, to consider the issues and strategies of coastal management.

Geography Southwest has collaborated with BCP Council to generate GCSE and A level learning resources based on the Christchurch Bay coastline and the FCERM Strategy that is currently underway (Christchurch Bay and Harbour FCERM Strategy).

The A level resources focus on Christchurch Bay and, in particular, the issues and management strategies facing Barton on Sea.

The materials comprise a range of colourful and engaging resources that consider the sediment cell in Christchurch Bay and the key management issues and strategies facing Barton on Sea. Students are presented with a decision-making exercise to consider the most appropriate management strategies at Barton on Sea. Additionally, there are supporting Teacher's Notes and suggested Student Activities.
