Teaching rivers at KS2: resources from the Rivers Trust

Introduction

The Rivers Trust (https://schools.theriverstrust.org/) has made available a number of interesting resources suitable for KS2 written by some of the individual Trusts.

Introduction to rivers

The Ribble Rivers Trust has produced an excellent introduction to rivers, which is available as a download (click the icon below) or at

An interactive introduction to rivers, written by Christi Lloyd helps children to discover how rivers are formed, how they shape our landscape and why rivers are so important. Check out the link below:

Down to the Wyre

The Wyre Rivers Trust have published a natural flood management story book for children. Written by the Trust's Conservation and Engagement Officer, the book explains the work that Rivers Trusts do to reduce flood risk in river catchments and why it is needed. It includes questions and activities aimed at primary school children but has things for everyone to learn! Take a look and if you need some further inspiration for home education, you can also download the teachers notes and lesson plan.

Project Kingfisher online

The South East Rivers Trust are offering a programme of curriculum-based activities for children to complete at home. They will be regularly publishing a series of linked activities on a different theme that children can complete with limited support from adults.

The activities are aimed at 7-9 year-olds with a 'Support' idea for younger children and a 'Challenge' suggestion for older children.

Source to Tap

Through this series of five narrated presentations by Source to Tap discover:

  • Where water comes from?
  • How rivers are formed?
  • What lives in our rivers?
  • How rivers get polluted?
  • How water gets from our rivers to our taps?

You'll find questions, activities and experiments at the end of each presentation to try at home.

Source to Tap is an innovative and exciting, cross-border partnership project. It focuses on the River Erne and the River Derg catchments which cross the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. It aims to develop sustainable, catchment-scale solutions for the protection of rivers and lakes, which are the main sources of our shared drinking water.

Source to Tap will deliver a learning and outreach programme. This will be targeted at informing and empowering the public about their role in protecting our clean and healthy freshwater environment. Source to Tap will pilot best-practice forestry and peatland land management measures. It will deliver an Agricultural Land Incentive Scheme focused on changing land management practices for the protection of our water.
