Forestry England: primary resources

Introduction

Forestry England have a wide range of free, downloadable resources suitable for primary teachers and pupils. The following lesson plans and activity packs support Geography and Science topics:

  • Exploring with your senses (KS1) – Discover the forest using all five senses. Create a sound map, feel the texture of different trees and make a woodland perfume.

  • Be a tree explorer (KS1 & KS2) – Introduce your class to three forestry related careers: wildlife ranger, forester and tree scientist.

  • Terrific trees (KS1 & KS2) – Explore the wonderful world of trees through interactive games around seed dispersal, the forest cycle and tree felling. Is it OK to fell trees?

  • Tree trumps game (KS1 & KS2) – Discover the trees growing in our nation’s forests and some of their leafy secrets! Did you know the English oak tree can live for 800 years?
  • Minibeasts in the forest (KS1) – Explore different forest habitats and go on a minibeast safari. How are these minibeasts adapted to their surroundings?
  • Natural materials: art (KS1 & KS2) – Inspire creativity through a scavenger hunt, animal art gallery and looking at patterns and shapes in nature.

  • Natural materials: structures (KS2) – Build some exciting and innovative structures using only natural materials! Which designs worked best and why?
  • Maths in the forest (KS1 & KS2) – Introduce your class to different Geography fieldwork skills using numbers, shapes, symmetry, estimation and measuring.
  • Geography outdoors (KS1) – Discover man-made and natural features, learn to recognise different tree types and, create your own maps, tracks and symbols!

  • Temperate forest biome (KS2) – Explore the characteristics of a native, temperate forest by looking at seasonal changes, vegetation structure and land use. How do they differ from tropical rainforests?
