Porlock Bay coastal fieldwork

Introduction

Porlock Bay in North Somerset is a perfect site for conducting fieldwork at both GCSE and A level (NEA).

A broad and largely sheltered bay, there are excellent opportunities for investigating evidence for longshore drift. There is a breakwater in Porlock Weir and numerous groynes along the coast to enable beach heights comparisons to be calculated. Beach profiles can be made safely across the bay and pebbles can be analysed.

The impact of coastal management (both hard and soft engineering) can also be considered.
