Teaching with GIS: climate change in the UK

Introduction

The Met Office, in collaboration with ESRI UK, have produced a comprehensive interactive GIS package of resources for students studying climate change.

The resources are split into two areas, Climate Science and Climate Change Impacts. There are three sets of resources aimed at Primary and Secondary age groups. The key questions covered in this resource are detailed below:

  • What is the difference between weather and climate?
  • What is the climate of the UK?
  • How has the climate of the UK changed over the last 11,000 years?
  • How are humans contributing to climate change?
  • What could the future climate of the UK be like?
  • What impacts will climate change have on people; across the UK? in your local area?
  • How can we adapt to minimise these impacts?

These colourful and engaging resources include StoryMaps, video, interactive maps and a host of additional impact resources focusing on, for example, flooding, health, farming and transport

The resources can be used either as a structured lesson (or series of lessons) or teachers may choose to "pick and mix" to fit in with planned curriculum content and lessons.

'Everything you need to help your learners explore the current climate of the UK, how it could change over the course of the 21st century and the impact it will have on our lives in the UK.'
